Enhancing
Team Performance
(Modules 4, 5, & 6)


Course Introduction:
Personal introductions, outline of next three days (or single module as appropriate), personal objectives for the course, how this stage builds on Stage One and leads into Stage Three, then general discussion in workgroups about their past experiences as learners, and how effective training can solve many performance problems.

Module 4:
Coaching Skills:
Video-based case study about simple needs analysis, the Context/Content/Process model, preparing for coaching, writing simple session plans, five-stage On Job Coaching model.
Basic Adult Learning theory.

Module 4:
Group Practicals:
Small groups design and present a simple training session using the above skills, which is then critiqued by the group. This is designed to grow self-confidence in a supportive environment prior to solo presentations.

Module 4:
Meeting Skills:
Discussion on how to plan for, advertise and run effective meetings, including follow-up stage, and how to get the most out of meetings you have to attend.

Participant's presentations: (3 day version only)
Each participant prepares (overnight) and then presents to the group a simple training session on a subject of their choice, using skills they have learned the day before. Positive feedback afterwards.

Module 5:
Delegation:
How to delegate, who to delegate to, and the benefits to both parties. Includes planning skills, preparation of the delegatee, and feedback/follow-up. What to delegate and what not to.

 Delegating good & bad tasks. Difference between delegation and abdication. Effect of delegation on morale.

Module 5:
Cost Control:
Focus is to look at areas of wastage in participant's own organisation, explanation of fixed/variable costs, emphasis on how small wastages can have a dramatic impact on profitability when added together, and sometimes even be fatal for the organisation.

Module 5:
Developing Teams:
A study of how teams form, the forces that form them and shape them, the processes that teams go through while forming, the make-up of team members, the characteristics of effective teams.

Module 6:
Monitoring Staff Performance:
Discussion about employee involvement in performance issues, and the need to monitor both individual & team performance.

Module 6:
Appraisals:
More correctly called Performance Feedback Meetings, this is a video based case study looking at how interviews should be conducted, and resulting in a framework for participants to put in place at work. The focus is on behaviour rather than personalities, and at positive feedback rather than negative criticism.

Module 6:
Interview Practicals:
A chance for each participant to play both sides of the fence and then act as observer. In groups of three, participants go through a set of fictional but realistic scenario's to test their interviewing & communication skills, followed by a debrief for constructive feedback from the observers.

Summary & Close: (3 day version only)
A review of the content, feedback from the team on areas of most impact, action plans for return to work, formal written evaluation of the course, and close.
